Band Bio:

The Mulberry Purple is a pulse-pounding, high-voltage rock band that throws all its inner energy in your face while it grips you with the intensity of their lyrics. Their musical roots can be traced back to the border town of Juarez, Mexico, a city whose musical blend is as diverse and rich as its culture and people. Inspired by such background, they've created a sound that merges the classic concept of straight up rock with their own musical roots into a fusion that is reminiscent of the heyday of rock.

L.A. based members G. Blake Lopez (vocals) David Aguilar (guitar), Julio Cervantes (bass) and Pepe Clarke (drums), have successfully rocked local fans at renowned live show venues such as the Roxy , The Troubadour and the Viper Room. Word of their crowd shaking performances has spread rapidly and each show the numbers only escalate.

With the recording of their first EP ...when the music fades The Mulberry Purple was able to package the characteristic energy of their live shows into a product that will surely attract many more to their powerful style, sound and music. Although you may initially be tempted to compare TMP to great bands that have ruled the world of rock, you will quickly discover this musical force is in an arena of its own.

Angel: Describe your first show that you performed at:

Blake: All I remember is that I wore a hat to cover my face and I wouldn't take my hands out of my pockets, it was at a shitty dive bar in Juarez-Mexico, which is some scary shit for a 15 year old.

Julio: Halloween backyard party in high school at my mothers, we had 4 kegs of beer and a PA system. It's probably the show that I have made more money in my whole life; it was an all ages show and beer for everyone. The house was packed!

David: I was about 13, we played a friends Quinceanera (kind of like a Sweet 16). It was full of Cowboys and we started things of with Lenny Kravitz's Are you Gonna Go My Way, all the kids started rocking, we played a couple of original tracks, the party was going great until we moved on to Metallica's For whom the Bell Tolls and things got rowdy. That's when the father of the Quinceanera walked up to us with an Icepick and told us to shut up... SO we did.

Angel: What makes your band unique? Explain why.

Blake: I think Rock music has lost a lot of its edge in the past few years maybe even a decade, evolution is obviously necessary but I think the genre has lost a lot on the way, you see all these bands crying about bullshit now-a –days that don’t seem to get that Rock is about high energy, about kicking ass. That’s what we do, you go to one of our shows and you can feel the energy in your face, and its non stop, we’re bringing that feeling back, of not knowing what is going to happen next, about being on the edge, about to loose control but without hurting musicianship and composition. There was a time when you walked down Sunset in L.A. and you could just feel the energy all around, music is about evolution but you can’t forget those roots.

David: Our band originates in the desert and streets of one of Mexico’s most notorious and violent Cities, Juarez. The harsh environment, and untamed night life provided a fertile ground to develop a strong, diverse and powerful sound. The fact that our city is a border town provided the duality and folklore you hear in our music.

Julio: The mix of influences each member contributes. The way four, very different individuals can be themselves and yet easily come together and create a sound with its own unique elements. It’s a concoction of feelings, knowledge and energy.

Angel: Name your first guitars, drum kits, etc.

David: My father bought my first guitar in a flea market for 10 $ I can't remember the brand, but it was enough to get me started. It was dark brown and looked like it came directly from the 60's.

Julio: Fender acoustic guitar and an Ibanez RG (Japan) and a Roland Juno 106 (that keyboard changed the whole perspective of music.)

Blake: Ibanez RS (Mexico), looked good but sounded like crap and wouldn’t stay tuned for more than 5 minutes.
