Band Bio:
From
the heart of the Midwest, its hard to believe Harmony of Lies started off
nothing more than a box of demos that began a digital venture into the on line
music community. Working with limited gear singer/songwriter Brent Leinter would
write record and produce demos from his home. The unique blend of overdrive,
synth and acoustics, made these demos the corner stone of Harmony of Lies unique
sound. Incorporating his love for graphic design, Brent published
harmonyoflies.com as an avenue to showcase his music and art.
Working independently, Harmony of Lies had become a musical wrecking force on
the digital scene. It wasn't long before Brent was in desperate need of a live
band. With many short lived member changes and extensive try outs, the band
found its final line up in the spring of 2004 with Dave, Troy, Nate, and Craig.
Harmony of Lies travel led the Midwest circuit regularly while booking shows to
the west coast on their in between time. Playing the Midwest's top clubs such as
Double Door, Logans Square Auditorium and the thriving college scene brought the
band a steady fan base and a drive to continue on their own.
Brent continued to write/produce and release songs every chance he could.
Catching the attention of industry professionals, Harmony of Lies headed to
Chicago's renowned Signal Sound Source Studios to record their first single.
Working with Grammy award winning producer Curtis Johnson (destiny's child) and
George Langis (Smashing Pumpkins/Mudvayne) HOL recorded 'Breaking' which was
instantly placed on The Thirsting movie soundtrack and earned a spot in the
film.
Harmony of Lies is currently recording their full length CD and heading out on
the road this fall. Still working as an independent act, Harmony of Lies proves
time and time again that hard work, determination and honesty can go a long way,
even in the entertainment industry.
Angel: What message are you
trying to send through your music?
Brent: There isn’t a direct message with our music.
We touch on a lot of things. We would like to create a sense of hope for our
listeners. We don’t want to make CD full of songs about feeling isolated, left
out or left behind. Everyone has been there at some point and we have too. We go
there sometimes with our music but try to offer solutions instead of asking
people to pay money to hear our problems. We want to offer listeners a little
get away from the normal life.
Nate: We draw from external imagery and senses which we try to convey to
the audience. It’s a shame that a lot of people don’t take the time to enjoy a
city sky line or a sunset on Lake Michigan. We try to create a landscape for
people to escape to that is comparable to these simple moments.
Angel: How long has your band
been together?
Brent: I’ve been putting out music under the name
Harmony of Lies for 3 years previous to the live band coming together. I
designed a website and started releasing tracks online. After a short while we
were getting show offers with out a firm line up of members so we had to roll
with it. We had to juggle members until we established the final line up. The
current line up is strong. We are all on the same page; we all share the same
vision.
Nate: I joined the band as a member a year and a half ago when the
original bassist left the band on the day they were scheduled for a video shoot.
Luckily I’ve been with HOL from the beginning helping out with odds and ends,
recording and production notes and such. I knew the songs and everything the
band was about. No try out was required. I was on my way to work one day, Brent
called and nine hours later I was sleeping on wood floor of a studio in downtown
Chicago.
Brent: Dave and Craig have been in the band since the beginning. They
were previous band mates I had played with in other bands. Dave was playing in
another band at the time I was getting this all started. He heard the HOL demos
and asked to join. He was a long time friends and it was a perfect fit. Troy is
the most recent addition. He is in the band because he fucking rocks.
Angel: What is each member’s
musical influence and contributions to the band?
Brent: That’s a tough question. There are so many
artists and bands that affect my creativity. Peter Gabriel, Vast, Porcupine
Tree, CKY, Kill Hannah. The list could go on and on. I have thing for simplicity
and integrity with music and artists who have poured so much heart into music it
shows. I usually record the songs at my home and then present them to the band.
We’ll make some tweaks at rehearsals and spice it up a little to make sure we
keep it all interesting.
Nate: Basically if Paul McCartney and Dimebag Darrell joined hands with
Porcupine Tree’s Steven Wilson producing them with Slash standing around for
pure rock’n’roll icon value then you would get where I’m coming from.
