Event Down has been an off
again/on again project of Rich Teslow(Drums) and Dale Schatz(Guitar) for over a
decade. In 2006 they have come back with a new focus and energy. The project has
transformed into a complete band with the addition of members Britt Bayers(Bass)
and Airien Lackey(Vocals). Now, with a private DAW studio, all the gear needed
to play any small venue, and a repertoire of songs sure to please any hard rock
fan, they are ready to unleash their unique sound to audiences hungry for music
with an edge.
Event Down collaborates the views of its members to produce music with
influences ranging from hardcore to classical to grunge and even mainstream
rock. They don't cut a song or a part because some people might think it's too
light or too heavy. Its all about what makes the song the best it can be. After
a year of songwriting, practicing, and recording they have self-produced a demo
and accumulated a set that will soon have them playing shows all over Portland.
Angel: Was there any pivitol moment in your life that
drove your passion for music? Please explain.
Rich: For me it's one of the few things I'm really good
at, and it's one of the few things that I get real satisfaction out of when we
do a good job.
Britt: It wasn't a single point in time. Music has always been a great
form of healing for me. Whenever I have a crummy day or am stressed out, I've
found that if I take that aggression out on the guitar or bass, I end up feeling
much better.
Dale: In Junior High I got the first five Metallica
albums and after that I just wanted to play guitar. Since then, I have had so
many influences that have overshadowed Metallica. I guess I'm kind of an
influence slut.
Airien: It's what I was meant for. It's in my soul.
Angel: What is the meaning, to each of you personally,
behind your band title?
Rich: Back in the beginning when Dale and I were
teenagers playing music we had called ourselves "Deadfall". About 6 months later
we got an email from some group in the southeast who said it was their name and
threatened to sue us over it. We were just 16 or 17 and couldn't believe those
guys were being such assholes over a name. So anyway, we began searching for a
new name that fit us and that we really felt would stick. I had a "Learn
Java" book lying around and I was thumbing through it and came across "Event
Down" and somehow that sorta stuck. Most of us in the group are geeks anyway so
it was fitting.
Angel: Is music your intended profession... or do you
have other goals as well?
Rich: I think all of us would love to make music
professionally but we're also realistic in our approach to it all. This is first
and foremost a hobby with aspiration vs. a "sold all my stuff to buy instruments
so I could be famous" deal. We've all talked it over and if that's the way it
went that would be great but we're going to keep our feet on the ground first.
Additional Comments:
Rich: Yeah, thank you for doing what you're doing. Anyone
who's willing to dedicate their time to help indie groups in any way makes you a
winner in our book. Keep up the hard work with the 'zine and keep in touch with
us!
