Coalesced in October of 2005 with
the addition of vocalist- chip Hudson, apsis have strived to set themselves
apart, not only from their local music scene, but to engage listeners at a
National level with their eccentric mix of solidly layered music and strong, yet
vulnerable vocals.
Eclectic, without sounding confused or unfocused, Birmingham Alabama's apsis
borrow influence from rock, metal, gothic, sludge, hardcore and progressive and
seam them together with a sound that is both current and nostalgic.
Spearheaded by the classically
trained Guitar work of Nick Mitchell, who often straddles the blurred lines of
many of today's sub genres, and corner-stoned upon the powerful rhythm section
of Steve Kirkpatrick (Drums) and Chad Lowery (Bass) Apsis creates sonic
landscapes occupied by haunting vocals that are at times both soft and sorrowful
as well as strong and determined.
Since their first live performance in early 2006, apsis have "wowed" audiences
all over the Southeast with their distinct brand of Heavy Atmospheric Rock.
They have released two EP's "Whispers Rust" (February 2006) and "Blood Hits the
Bridle" (May 2006), and plan to re-enter the studio by the end of 2006 to
complete work on their first Full Length.
They have had songs played on Internet Radio stations as far away as Australia.
As well as having songs featured on www.mallbirmingham.com,
www.bhamrevolution.com, and www.darktechradio.com .
apsis have built a solid, faithful and ever-growing following, and looking
forward to their continued Evolution, are eager to follow wherever the music
leads.
Angel: What inspires your work?
Apsis: We all have different "inspirations" I'm sure…but
I know that Nick (guitarist) writes a Lot of his guitar parts with like an image
in mind….like we have a song called "aspiration" that he wrote with the feeling
of someone struggling in the water trying to aspirate the water out of his
lungs.
And, personally All my lyrics are based on real life experiences from death, to
lost loves, to my own personal struggle with Spiritual Ideals.
Angel: What other bands would you say you sound like?
Apsis: I don't know, hahaha…what WE think WE sound like
is obviously different from others perceptions. We have been compared to
everyone from Tool to Isis to Deftones to Opeth. And, I mean, that's a pretty
diverse range.
Angel: What song (of any band) got you through a hard
time in your life?
Apsis: It's weird cause I'm not a Huge Fan or
anything,…but Chevelle's "Send the Pain Below" was the first song I heard
minutes after my brother died,…so that always brings me back to that place when
I hear it.
Angel: Are you planning for any tours across the US?
Apsis: Yes. Actually we are working right now on a small
tour up the East Coast, hopefully up to New England and then back down and into
Florida. We are hoping to have our Full Length finished by then, so that we'll
have it to take with us. We are all so stoked for this,….and hopefully we will
get a chance to meet a lot of new people and make plenty of new fans,…..and all
while doing what we love.
Band Update: 3/18/07
Apsis is still working
Very Hard preparing to play as much as possible over the next few months in
support of Our new CD "Only the Dead Came Home"....which We recorded over
the weekend of February 16th 17th and 18th....
I will be finishing off the vocals this next week, and after that it will be
mixed, mastered, pressed and released and We are Extremely excited about the New
Material.
We have also undergone some changes Inside the band.
We have replaced Our original bassist (Chad Lowery) with an old friend and
Amazingly talented bass player (Ronnie del Mar).
Our "sound" had also changed as a result.
We all feel that Our music is now more "polished" and "structured" than it has
been in the past.
